First Responder is the first level of care in the Emergency Medical System. This semester- long course will teach you principles of basic life support. You will learn the different levels of EMS and how they interact with each other. This course will prepare you to enter an EMT or firefighter training program or to volunteer in your community as a first responder. The course is also very helpful for those wishing to pursue a career in a health-related field. You will learn basic techniques such as wound care, splinting, back boarding, CPR, and airway management. You will also learn to recognize medical emergencies such as a heart attack, stroke, anaphylaxis, respiratory arrest, and diabetic coma.

The focus of this course is not to offer a “cookbook” recipe for all injuries, but for students to have a fundamental understanding of anatomy and physiology and to apply critical thinking skills needed to identify and manage a variety of medical and trauma emergencies. At the successful completion of the course students have the option of receiving a First Responder and Basic Life Support CPR certification. More information will be provided the first day of class.

We are offering 3 sections of the course all under MEL 2754. The class is 3 credits and three different sessions will be held on Tuesday’s and Thursdays this fall. For course times please visit the registrars website at http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/soc/

National CPR and AED Awareness Week intends to encourage states, cities and towns to establish organized programs that provide CPR and AED trainings and increase public access to AEDs.

The University of Florida’s CPR and Safety Training Center has stepped up to the challenge by offering FREE CPR and First Aid Training courses for all UF faculty and staff. During this week, university faculty and staff will be equipped with the vital knowledge and skills to respond to a life-threatening situation with confidence.

Through this outreach, we hope to raise public awareness of sudden cardiac arrest, suffered by more than 300,000 people each year and increase the chance of survival that can be achieved by having at least one person in each household trained in CPR and the use of an AED.
