Course Schedule All Courses take place in Yon Hall Rm. 271 unless directed otherwise during time of registration.

Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is SOLO’s most popular course and it creates a solid foundation in the basics of backcountry medical care. Started as the “Mountain/Woods First Aid” course back in 1975, this was the first course of its kind in the United States, and it is the curriculum upon which all other backcountry medicine courses are based.

The WFA course is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. It also meets the ACA guidelines. This course focuses on the basic skills of : Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. To insure that all students are understanding the  material there are ongoing evaluations of practical skills, and written assessments throughout the course.

At the end of the course you will receive a SOLO WFA certification, which is good for two years. The WFA may also give continuing ed credits (depending on the specific requirements for your certification) and is approved for recertifying SOLO’s Wilderness First Responder (WFR) program.

Course Length: 16 hours (2 days)

dsc00474Advanced Wilderness First Aid

Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worsts. By learning a few basic skills, you can make the difference between a good outcome and a bad one– and maybe even save a life. The Advanced Wilderness First Aid (AWFA) course is for anyone who wants more than WFA, but not as much as Wilderness First Responder, such as river guides.

Building on the WFA, the AWFA course goes into greater depth on the basic first aid subjects, emphasizes leadership skills, and improvised litters and litter carrying. To insure that all students are understanding the  material there are ongoing evaluations of practical skills, and written assessments throughout the course.

At the end of the course you will receive a SOLO AWFA certification, which is good for two years. The AWFA course can be used to recertify SOLO’s or any other 72+ hour WFR certification.

Course Length: 32 hours (4 days)
