Community Events
Gator Saver
Gator Saver is the name given to all of our community events. Our department hosts a number of community events throughout the year to raise awareness and educate our community in the importance of CPR training. Our community efforts are geared around the needs of both the University of Florida campus as well as Alachua County. Our center offers a myriad of courses to meet the interest of the members of our community. Our goal is to increase the chain of survival, one person at a time, through bystander CPR training.
5K Run – December 5, 2009, 7:30 am – 10:00 am
The purpose of the race is to raise awareness within the UF and Gainesville community on the importance of learning CPR. Running strengthens your heart which can decrease the rates for obtaining heart-related illnesses and helps you become better equipped to handle stress. Too often are innocent lives lost in situations that could have been avoided through CPR. Our training center believe that it s a life skill that is vital for everyone to know. All of the proceeds from the race will go towards our Annual Gator Saver.
Stroke Prevention/CPR Workshop – January 30, 2010, 10:00am – 12:00pm
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked, either by blood clots or narrowed blood vessels, or when there is bleeding in the brain. Deprived of nutrients, brain nerve cells begin to die within a few minutes. As a result, a stroke can cause sensory and vision loss, problems with meter coordination, or difficulty in speech. In many cases, the effects of a stroke are irreversible. This workshop will give people the knowledge of what precautions to undergo in order to prevent a stroke from happening to you or a loved one. In addition to the stroke recognition to prevention program, participants are trained using the American Heart Association’s CPR Anytime Program and Kit. The CPR Anytime program takes 22 minutes, and each kit includes a personal Mini Anne CPR Manikin, CPR Anytime Skills Practice DVD, and AHA’s CPR for Family and Friends Booklet, accessories for the program and directions of use printed on the box.
Healthy Babies/Babysitter Safety Training – March 27, 2010, 10 am – 12:00pm

3rd Annual Gator Saver Day – April 24, 2010, 10:00am – 1:00pm
Approximately 335,000 Americans die annually of cardiovascular disease and sudden cardiac arrest – before reaching the hospital. Cardiac arrest strikes people of all ages and levels of fitness, usually without warning. Many of these lives could be saved by training community members in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). The Gator Saver program is a non-certification event that provides participants the opportunity to learn the lifesaving skills of CPR in case of a cardiac emergency. Participants are trained using the American Heart Association’s CPR Anytime Program and Kit. The CPR Anytime program takes 22 minutes, and each kit includes a personal Mini Anne CPR Manikin, CPR Anytime Skills Practice DVD, and AHA’s CPR for Family and Friends Booklet, accessories for the program and directions of use printed on the box. The goal of the mass training is to help increase a victim’s chance of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest. Each participant receives a CPR Anytime kit to take home with them to share with family and friends.
CPR in the Schools – May 2010
This is one way we plan to increase the chain of survival through bystander CPR training. Sponsorship funds will allow us to purchase 2000 CPR anytime kits and distributes them to students in the Alachua County School System. The students will be trained in bystander CPR, and gain extra credit by taking the CPR Anytime Kit home and training at least five friends and/or family members. The goal is to train 10,000 individuals through this program. We will partner with the American Heart Association to track their progress through the Compass Program. We are still working out the details with Alachua County Public Schools. This event will cost approximately $75,000.00, and we hope to continue this training each year.
National CPR & AED Awareness Week – June 1-5, 2010
Each year our training center and the American Heart Association celebrate the National CPR & AED Awareness Week during the first week of June. Our office holds a number of events during the week to provide UF’s Faculty and Staff the opportunity to take CPR/AED and First Aid courses through our training center for certification and non-certification purposes. During this week we work towards increasing the number of individuals who are CPR trained in our UF community. We also educate our faculty and staff on the importance of knowing CPR and how this can benefit them in both the workplace and at home.
Respiratory Care Week – October 26-31, 2010
Most people may not realize it, but a properly running respiratory system is essential to a prolonged life. In order to carryout activities throughout our daily lives we as humans all need energy. Our respiratory system is governed by the need of oxygen, and obstructions such as smoking hinder the regeneration of a great supply of that oxygen. In celebration of Respiratory Care Week, the CPR and Safety Training center want to encourage all individuals to get more exercise. Exercise leads not only to a healthier heart but also helps the lungs become stronger as you breathe in more air. Our office holds a number of events during the week to provide UF’s Faculty and Staff the opportunity to take CPR/AED through our training center for certification purposes.
